System 96® Annealing Information

Regarding the annealing, variations in size and particularly thickness of pieces will require different annealing time. Solid or very thick-walled pieces need to be held longer at the ideal annealing temperature (960F) and should have a slower rate of decline from 960 to about 800F.

For most hollow blown objects a ramp down of 100 degrees per hour from 960 to 800F should be sufficient. For paperweights and thick-walled pieces a ramp down of 50 degrees per hour from 960 to 800F should be sufficient.

The amount of time to adequately anneal glass goes up exponentially as the glass gets thicker. When in doubt, it is always safer to lengthen the annealing time and ramp down slowly.
